| I’ve built up something of a reputation as a public speaker in recent years and since 2004 I’ve delivered over 150 presentations to RSPB members groups, Wildlife Trusts and Ornithological Societies from north Devon to Bolton. Talking on an
ever-expanding range of natural history subjects, I’ll be continuing my hugely successful programme of winter lectures up and down the country in the coming
12 months, so contact
me if you’d be interested in a talk. I can promise you a thoroughly professional presentation – engaging, entertaining and fun. |

The Talks
I’m always adding new presentations but these are some of my most popular talks: |
| |
| Scotland |
| The Wilderness on Your Doorstep |
We explore Speyside, in the heart of the Highlands, with its ancient Caledonian pines, sparkling lochs, sweeping moors and towering Cairngorm mountains . . . home to Capercaillie, Golden Eagle, Crested Tit, Ptarmigan, Scottish Crossbill, Slavonian Grebe and many more. Then it’s out to the coastline, including the
Moray Firth, the weed-strewn shores of the west coast, and an island ‘taster’, where seabirds, Sea Eagles, Otters and Minke Whales are the stars . . . and all right on our doorstep. |
| |
| ‘There She Blows!’ – Dolphins, Whales and seabirds all around us |
| How to see them, save them, and celebrate them! |
About one third of the World’s cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) have been recorded in British waters and few people realize just how easy it is to see some of them around our coast – especially in Scotland. With a feast of great pictures – including seabirds - discover just what’s out there around our shores, plus where to see them, how to get close, and what’s being done to conserve them. |
| |
| Yellowstone and Grand Teton |
| Birds & mammals‘where hell bubbles up’! |
A visit to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks – one of the largest, most wild temperate-zone ecosystems on Earth but with hotels, easy roads and friendly rangers to make it easy! With peaks over 12,000 feet, endless forests, lakes and geysers, in a region once rumoured to be "the place where hell bubbles up", birds include Pine Grosbeak, Great Grey Owl and Steller’s Jay, plus it’s home to Bison, Moose, Elk, Beaver, Grizzly and Black Bear and, famously, re-introduced Wolf packs. |
| |
| Spitsbergen |
| Birds and Polar Bears in the easy-to-visit high Arctic |
Spitsbergen, part of Svalbard north of Norway, is only 800 miles from the North Pole but ocean currents make it the easiest-to-reach Arctic. Amidst peaks, glaciers, sea ice and 16 million Little Auks, Polar Bears stalk seals and incomparable Arctic birds like Long-tailed Skua, Ivory Gull, Grey Phalarope and King Eider live. Including some incredible video footage of birds, plus Polar Bear hunting Walrus, this is one of my most popular talks. |
| |
| Baja California – Mexico’s ‘Galapagos’ |
| Birds and the ultimate in whale-watching |
Renowned as the place where the BBC filmed Blue Whales, this finger of land that sticks down from California USA is a bird and wildlife paradise. It’s a place where you can actually touch a Grey Whale, see Costa’s Hummingbirds amidst 50’ cacti, and watch Coyote trot along deserted beaches. There are shearwaters and petrels, shorebirds and warblers, but most of all you’ll see more mighty whales than anywhere else in the world – including Blue Whale, the largest animal on Earth. |
| |
| Over the Sea to Spain |
| Coast to coast amidst Europe’s best wildlife |
The list of spectacular places and the list of astounding birds have justly made Spain a world-class wildlife destination. From Pyrenees to Extremadura, Andalucia to Almeria there are jewels such as Wallcreeper, Lammergeier, Great Bustard, Spanish Imperial Eagle, Black Woodpecker, Azure-winged Magpie, trumpeter Finch and many more. However, there are special butterflies and mammals too,
and even getting there offers the chance of some superlative whale- and dolphin-watching too. |
| |
| Scottish Isles |
| World-class birds, wildlife and natural beauty |
From the Hebrides to St Kilda, and from Shetland to the Bass Rock, the islands of the Scottish coast are of world-renown for their stunning beauty and enchanting birds, plants and mammals . . . some of the glories of the British Isles. Just some of the stops on our journey will include: the geese of Islay; the Sea Eagles and whales of Mull; the machair Corncrakes of the Uists; the tumultuous seabird cities of remote St Kilda; Otters and Phalaropes on Shetland; and the Puffins and Gannets of the famous Bass Rock. |
| |
| India |
| Seeing, and saving, the Tiger |
Using compelling images of this most enigmatic of predators at it’s core, this is an exploration of the wildlife Madhya Pradesh in central India. Birds and mammals here are simply dazzling, amidst a culture that’s so very different to our own, and as well as relishing the barbets and orioles, Peacocks and Jungle Owlets, we’ll discover the enormous conservation problems that the Tiger faces – but also see how those problems could be over-come. |
| |
| Why Not Wolves? |
| Can we find space for Britain’s lost animals? |
Grey Wolves are back in Yellowstone, and they are coming back all across mainland Europe, so why not Britain? Amidst the controversy here’s a conservation success story that should make us think. Using top-quality images and with an entertaining, thought-provoking text, discover the wolves and other mammals plus birds that we’ve lost in our country – and perhaps could have back again? |
|
| Tooth & Claw |
| Britain's wild predators and the way we feel about them |
Pete Cairns and Mark Hamblin, with my assistance, have spent two years getting under the skin of our attitudes towards predators. How we really feel about issues such as Sea Eagles, Fox hunting, Sparrowhawks in our gardens, domestic cats and even the reintroduction of Wolves. The result is a fascinating insight – brought to life by spectacular and previously unseen photography. It asks questions of ourselves: as the most powerful predator of all. So I was in my car, and I was driving along, and my boss rang up, and he said "You've been promoted." And I swerved.
And then he rang up a
second time and said "You've been promoted again." And I swerved again.
He rang up a third time and said "You're managing director."
And I went into a tree.
A policeman came up and said
"What happened to you?"
And I said "I careered off the road."
